1. Reviewing notes on a staff in standard notation. (Treble and bass cleff.)
a) Placing notes on a staff using mini white-boards and little ghosts and spiders for the "notes". b) Writing with markers on white boards and playing them on a keyboard or xylophone. c) Using technology: reviewing notes with the "Note Identification Trainer" on the ipad with the "Tenuto" app. (Or www.musictheory.net) 2. Preparing music for upcoming performances on the students' instrument of choice. Learning new instrument techniques. (Ex: piano scales and chords, snare drum rudiments, vocal technique.) 3. Drum Circle Activities: a) Warm-up = "Let's all Play our Drum" b) creating a drum piece using improvisation and the "rondo" form. c) Learning the "Sow it on the Mountain" rhythm and singing the song that goes with it. (From Will Schmidt's World Drumming book.) d) Introduction to the "Desert Fire" rhythm in 2-3 parts. The past two weeks have included reviewing note values by making the following notes out of pipe cleaners: whole note half note quarter note eighth note (Story of "The Lonely Eighth Note".) Reviewing reading notes on a staff (treble and bass) using mini white boards and "river rocks". This week, we made words out of the notes (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G) and wrote them on the staff. Students have practiced reading these words. The next step, is playing the "words" to see what they sound like. (The glockenspiel is pictured, but we have also done this on the piano.) Here is what you can expect to do in your first class: 1. Introduction and "ice-breaker" activities. (Using Kagan strategies) (Goal setting: What do you hope to achieve in Talented Music class this year?) 2. Music note value review a) making notes out of pipe cleaners (whole, half, quarter, eighth. 5 lines and spaces too) b) Story of "The Lonely Eighth Note" c) creating and clapping rhythms 3. Drum Circle Activities (each student will pick a drum/percussion instrument. Djembe, cajon, bodhran, agogo bells, claves, shaker, tambourine, etc.) a) warm - ups: "Let's all play our drum", "pieces of 8", stomp lead b) Rumble: plain rumble (dynamics), rumble wave, rumble circles c) groove to recording (tr. 1 of Drum Circle CD) d) rhythm together (clap and play). solo during claps. Ms. Tully
Shea Tully is a graduate of LSU. (BM, BME, and MM) She plays the oboe in the Baton Rouge Symphony. Ms. Tully has lived in England, Ireland, and Wales and has traveled extensively in Western Europe. She incorporates her experience of world music into her teaching. Archives
